VirusTotal combines the capabilities of multiple antivirus products and online scanning engines, known as Contributors, to enhance its multi-scanning service.
In November 2018, the Cyber National Mission Force, a part of the U.S. Cyber Command, joined as a Contributor.
This collaboration pools data from various sources, enabling users to detect viruses that their personal antivirus might not catch or to confirm any false alarms.
Users can upload files as large as 650 MB directly to the website or send them via email (up to 32 MB).
Additionally, antivirus software developers have the opportunity to access files that triggered alerts on other scanners but were cleared by their own systems. This assists them in refining their products and, consequently, enhances VirusTotal’s overall effectiveness.
