Cargo Inspection and Verification

Background

Verify Cargo Inspection is a Mexico-based company providing independent cargo inspection services for international shipments.

I was engaged to attend a distribution centre in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, to oversee the loading of goods into shipping containers on behalf of one of its overseas customers.

The work involved attending the warehouse during scheduled loading operations, checking shipment details and providing the inspection reports and photographs required by the client.

Objectives

The main requirement was to check that the goods being loaded corresponded with the shipment documentation and to provide an independent record of the loading process.

This involved checking product references, quantities, packaging and batch information, as well as recording the condition of the goods and containers.

Verify Cargo Inspection also required photographic evidence and a separate loading report for each container, allowing its team to review the findings without attending the site.

My Contributions

Before the inspection, I reviewed the client’s instructions and reporting requirements to familiarise myself with the process.

On site, I liaised with warehouse staff and observed the preparation and loading of the goods; I checked product and packaging information, recorded relevant details and took photographs to support the inspection reports.

I also documented the loading arrangements, container identification details and other information required by the client.

With several containers being loaded throughout the day, I needed to keep the records and photographs organised so that the information could be matched to the correct shipment.

The work was carried out alongside normal warehouse operations, following the site’s safety requirements and procedures.

Results

The inspection work was completed, with the reports and supporting photographs submitted to Verify Cargo Inspection.

All documentation was accepted, and the client confirmed they were happy with the work undertaken.

The assignment provided the company with the independent, on-site inspection support it required, together with a photographic and written record of the loading operations for its overseas customer.

Reflection

This was a different type of assignment from my usual work in information security, compliance and business administration, but many of the skills involved were familiar.

Checking information, keeping accurate records and providing evidence to support findings have been important parts of my previous roles; the same approach was useful when carrying out the cargo inspections.

It was also interesting to gain experience of working in a busy distribution environment and following an established inspection process.

The positive feedback from Verify Cargo Inspection was particularly welcome and I’d be happy to undertake similar assignments in the future.
